A Note From Charles

Dear {!name_fix},

Booo....Be Afraid! Very Afraid!! Its Halloween!!! On Sunday evening my door bell will be ringing madly, as little "people" dressed up as all kinds of characters will be asking me and my family for treats so that we can avoid them playing a trick on us.

Halloween is celebrated in a big way in Canada. Its a fun time! Its also a reminder that the winter is fast approaching. In British Columbia, where I live, the Fall (Autumn) has been mild this year. We have had far less rainy days that usual, and there have been many more sunny days. The temperature outside today in Vancouver is currently around 9 degrees celsius. Toronto is about 11 degrees, Edmonton 1, Calgary 5, Winnipeg 10 and Montreal 10.

Comparing those temperatures may be a little misleading....as the winter closes in, the temperatures in Eastern Canada will plummet. Here, on the West Coast, the temperatures will remain mild. In Vancouver, we will rarely see temperatures much below minus 2 or 3 degrees. Most days will be above zero, and we will probably have two or three days of light snow at the most.

On the contrary, the temperatures in Winnipeg will drop dramatically to well below zero for much of the winter. Snow will fall on the East Coast, and Toronto and Montreal will probably have temperatures that are below zero for much of the winter. We do have the best weather in Canada, here on the West Coast. But take heart, the cold cities are well geared up to handle the cold, and the weather does not become a big issue for most immigrants, even from sunnier climates like those of South America, or Africa. And, we do have glorious summers!

There are lots of important things to consider when choosing your final home destination in Canada. Weather may be one of those considerations, but you also need to consider the places in Canada where your job skills may be in demand, where you will be able to start the business you may be planning, where you possibly have family and friends to help you make the transition to your new life more easy, whether you are a big city or small town person and whether you want to live in a place where home ownership is something you can achieve.

In this issue of our newsletter you will find some useful information about the skills and attributes that employers are looking for, as well as details about the home rental and ownership markets. I hope that it has value for you. Look out for our next newsletter in two weeks time.

Valuable Information for Job-Seekers

The Business Council of British Columbia released a report this week in which they discussed their findings. Here are the attributes and skills that are being sort in new job-seekers.

Employers are looking for the following top five attributes in applicants for new jobs: honest-ethical, accountable-responsible, high performance standards, enthusiastic-positive attitude and customer service-oriented.

The top five skills that are being sought are interpersonal abilities, leadership abilities, speaking and listening abilities, teamwork abilities and problem-solving abilities.

Make sure that your resume reflects your skills and abilities. Employers want to see evidence of these abilities. Ensure that you include details of extra-curricular pursuits and community activity that would show evidence that you have developed communications, teamwork and leadership skills.

Rental Market Low Down

Condiminium (apartment) construction is at a high both in Toronto and Vancouver. Eventually a large number of these apartments will become available for rental. With this continuing influx of available rental accomodation, all signs are that it is currently a renter's market and this won't change in the foreseeable future. TD Bank, one of Canada's largest banks predicts that vacancy rates, particularly in the big cities, will likely rise further in 2005 . The TD bank believes that Immigrants make up a large portion of the people seeking to rent and comprising the rental market. The major point is that there should be lots of really good rental deals available as there will be more rental accomodation available than there are renters.

Buying a Home

If you are a buyer of property, you may choose to finance your purchase with a mortgage. Best rates available this week (28/10/04) are as low as 4.88% for a 5 year mortgage and 5.99% for an 18 year mortgage. Remember, that in Canada, rates are very competitive and sometimes vary over a period as short as a week or even a day in some instances. Rates right now at some of the lowest points in history and have made it very affordable for many people to buy their own home.

This means that if you finance the purchase of your home with a $100 000.00 5 year mortgage term, and you chose to pay back the mortgage over 25 years, your monthly payment at 4.88% would be about $574.79. (The term of the mortgage refers to the amount of time that the contract is written for and that the interest rate is guaranteed for - not to be confused with the amortization period which is 25 years in our example. After the term expires you can either repay the balance of the principal then owing or renegotiate the mortgage at current rates and conditions)

Canadian Dollar

Charles Recommends

I have told you about the skills and attributes that are important if you are seeking a job. Make sure that you prepare a resume in the accepted Canadian format. In Canada the word resume and not curriculum vitae is used and it would be wise on your part to start using the local terminologies so that you can show that you are quick to assimilate into Canadian culture.

It is important that your resume is structured according to the customary Canadian format (which is quite different to that of certain other countries) so that you can emphasize your achievements rather than just list your previously held jobs and qualifications. Employers are a lot less interested in how important your job was in your previous country than what you can do to help that employer through your employment, solve a particular problem that he or she may have, and in this way contribute to the bottom line.

Be willing to take a position that you may not have accepted in your line of work in the country you left. Once you have a job, and once you have the opportunity to show that you are good at what you do and can contribute to the business concern in a meaningful way, it is very likely that your employer will take note and you could build a meaningful career within that business.

I have personal experience of immigrants who would not accept a position that they felt was beneath them and two years later were still struggling to find a job. Now with a lot more desperation! On the contrary, I know people who were willing to accept a position that was at a lower level in their line of business, to the job they left in their previous country. They have now worked themselves into postions in Canada that are far more responsible than the position they left. You need a platform to show your talents. No stage, no show!!

There are many immigrants to Canada who hold very responsible positions in business and government. Some of our biggest business owners are immigrants who made their fortune in Canada and are worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Remember, the importance of the job you previously held will be no guarantee of getting as important a job, or even a job at all, in Canada. Some people take a while to understand and accept that notion. The sooner you accept it, the better your chances are of succeeding!
